Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North America. It is very easy to learn and lots of fun, in fact it is addictive! Pickleball is not a new sport, it was first started in the US in 1965 and has recently grown very quickly in western Canada, mostly in BC, Alberta and Ontario. Pickleball is played in school physical education programs and at parks and recreation centres, correctional facilities, camps, YMCAs and retirement communities. The sport is very popular especially among active senior adults and at community centres. The game is a mixture of tennis, ping pong and badminton. Players use wooden or composite paddles smaller than tennis rackets but larger than ping pong paddles. A plastic ball similar in makeup to a Wiffle Ball is used.

It is gaining popularity here in NS. Recently the Nova Scotia Pickleball Association was formed in May, 2011. Currently, individuals play indoors throughout the fall and winter months at the St. Margaret's Centre. Although it was introduced as an outdoor sport, it can easily be played indoors on a badminton court; the court dimensions are the same, lowering the badminton net to 36 inches. It is a great opportunity for seniors to learn this sport and the camaraderie and friendships formed last forever. If anyone is interested in coming out for a demonstration or simply watching or playing, we will be glad to provide equipment and give free introductory lessons.
